Copart (United State)

When participating in Copart US auctions, various fees are applied, some of which may not be disclosed until after winning a bid. Below are the most commonly applied fees:

  • 1. Buyer Fee: This fee varies based on the final sale price of the auctioned vehicle, and is one of the primary costs of buying through Copart.
  • 2. Gate Fee: A standard charge of $79 is levied for the handling and administrative costs of processing the vehicle through the gate of a Copart facility.
  • 3. Environmental Fee: Copart charges a $10 fee for proper handling and disposal of waste products from automobiles.
  • 4. Virtual Bid Fee: Participants in online auctions are subject to this fee, which covers the technological and administrative costs associated with virtual bidding.
  • 5. Late Payment Fee: Late payment for auctioned vehicles will incur a fee of $50 per vehicle.
  • 6. Storage Fee: This fee varies by location and is charged for vehicles that remain on Copart premises beyond the allotted free storage period.
  • 7. Third-party Finance Fee: For buyers who choose to finance through a third-party lender facilitated by Copart, there is an additional fee of $69. This fee covers the administrative efforts required to coordinate with external financing entities.
  • 8. Re-list Fee: If the buyer fails to pay within 8 days, a fee of 10% of the final sale price (minimum $600) will be charged for relisting the vehicle.
  • 9. Others Fee: There may be additional government fees and taxes included, making it difficult to determine the total cost. To account for this, we include options to add additional fees.
  • 10. Broker Fee: Note that (This fee only applied if you use broker) to buy a vehicle from Copart, they may charge a fee depending on the state where the vehicle is located. Each state has unique licensing requirements, and brokers also have their own fees in addition to Copart’s fees.     Who needs a license:

  • 1. Businesses: Dealerships, dismantlers, and similar businesses typically need a license to buy vehicles with specific titles on Copart.

    • who might not need a license:

  • 2. Regular people: In some states, you can buy vehicles with certain titles, like salvage titles, without a business license. These are called “No License Required” vehicles.

    • Title type

    Clean Title:

  • Indicates the vehicle has no reported major damage or prior salvage history.
  • This is the most desirable title for buyers seeking vehicles in good condition.
  • However, it’s important to investigate further as some states may have variations in “clean” titles (e.g., Minnesota Peddle Non-Public Clean Title).

    • Non-Clean Title:

  • This is a broad category encompassing various conditions that affect the vehicle’s history or value.
  • Common examples of Non-Clean titles on CoPart include:
    • 1. Salvage Title: Vehicle has been declared a total loss by an insurance company, often due to severe damage.
    • 2. Flood Title: Vehicle has been submerged in water, potentially causing extensive electrical and mechanical problems.
    • 3. Lien Title: The vehicle has an outstanding loan or lien that needs to be settled before ownership can be transferred.

    Copart Payment method

    Copart provides a range of payment options to suit different preferences and circumstances. Below is a breakdown of the available choices:

    For Domestic Members in the US:

  • 1. Wire Transfer: This method is trusted for transactions and is popular among international buyers. It’s recommended to initiate transfers well before an auction due to processing time.
  • 2. Credit/Debit Cards: At all Copart US locations, on-site payments are accepted when the cardholder presents a valid photo ID, There may be limits on the amount that can be charged.
  • 3. Cash: It’s always best to verify with the specific Copart branch if they accept cash as a payment method.
  • 4. Money Orders & Cashier’s Checks: These are widely accepted for in-person payments at any Copart facility.
  • 5. Company Checks: Members who have been authorized can make payments using company checks by enrolling in Copart’s ePay system, which facilitates electronic payments.
  • 6. Mobile Wallets: For a quick and easy checkout process, mobile wallets such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay, and Google Pay are accepted at all US locations. Ensure your mobile wallet is set up prior to use.
  • Third-Party Financing: Copart has partnerships with certain lenders who provide financing options to buyers, subject to approval.

    • For International Members:

  • 1. Wire Transfer: Due to its high level of security and universal acceptance, wire transfer is the recommended payment method for international members. It’s advisable to account for the time it might take for international wire transfers to be processed.

    • Virtual Bidding Fee

    There are two types of fees: Pre-Bid Fee and Live Bid Fee. Pre-Bid Fee is for bids placed before the live auction and Live Bid Fee is for bidding in real-time during the auction.

    Copart (United Kingdom)

    Copart UK has a number of fees that members are required to pay which can differ based on their membership type, the quantity of purchases they make, the final selling price of the vehicle and other relevant circumstances. Below are the primary fees that you should be familiar with:

    Bidding and Buying Fees

  • 1. High-volume Members (Fee A): These are members who have purchased and paid for 12 or more vehicles, which were dispatched from their premises in the previous year. If you are a high-volume member, all vehicles that you purchase in the current year will be charged at the high-volume member rate, which is Fee A.
  • 2. Low-volume Members (Fee B):Members who purchase less than 12 vehicles in the previous year will be charged the low-volume rate, Fee B, for all vehicles bought in the current year.

    • Additional Fees

  • 1. Lot Retrieval Fee: A Lot Retrieval Fee of £40.00 is applicable to all vehicles. This fee covers the transportation of the vehicle from the sale or storage area to the loading area of Copart UK’s Operation Centre.
  • 2. Late Payment Fee: If you fail to pay for the vehicle’s amount and all applicable fees within three business days of purchase, a Late Payment Fee of £40.00 per vehicle will be imposed. It is important to note that this timeframe includes the day of sale.
  • 3. Storage Fee: A Storage Fee will be applied on a daily basis, starting from the day of purchase, with the exception of the initial free days. If you make an online bid, the first four days are free of charge. However, if you make a kiosk or buy-it-now bid, only the first three days are free.
  • Online Bids: Days 5-9+ charge of £5.00 – £20.00 per day, escalating with each passing day.
  • Kiosk or Buy It Now: Days 4-9+ charge of £10.00 – £20.00 per day, escalating with each passing day.
  • 4. Vehicle Relist Fee: If the sale price and all associated fees are not paid within six calendar days (including weekends and UK bank holidays) after the auction, you will be charged a relist fee. The relist fee will be equal to the greater of either 10% of the hammer price of the vehicle or £250. You are required to pay this fee in full within 14 calendar days of the invoice date to avoid further charges.
  • 5. Copart Buying Fee: Copart buying fee depends on your membership type and the vehicle’s sale price.

    • Payment method

    Please note that Copart is unable to accept payments for lots over the phone and Part payments will also not be accepted.

    Please note that overseas bank transfers may take up to 5 working days, excluding weekends and UK bank holidays to reflect in your account.

    Payments cannot be made in cash at their Operation Centres. Please use one of the alternative payment methods listed below.

    Copart bidding fee

    When you are physically present at a Copart facility and use the kiosk available on-site to place a bid, you will not be charged any additional fees.

    However, if you choose to use the terminals provided at a Copart facility, you will be charged an extra fee, which will be based on the final sale price of the vehicle.

    Additionally, if you decide to bid using your personal device, whether you are at a Copart facility or elsewhere, you will be subject to an increased bidding fee.
